“Surgical” Procedures in a Medi-Spa?
With the rapid rise of the spa industry and the lucrative business of beauty, the consumer is being given a choice of having rejuvenatory procedures performed in the inappropriate setting of a glorified beauty salon. Neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport, and facial fillers such as Restylane are being injected into people’s faces by inexperienced individuals. There is very little quality control and the marketing-hype and occasionally the comfort and convenience of your local med spa is overshadowing the very important element of safety. A few months ago a review of cases of blindness after injections was published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official journal of our specialty. This was chilling. It demonstrated the real risks of a catastrophic irreversible outcome such as blindness with even a simple procedure such as filler injection. The consumer does not realize that any of these procedures carry risks and they can forever change their lives. As board certified plastic surgeons we are continually updating our knowledge of anatomy, injection techniques, and rescue of complications. That is what we go to school for and that is what goes with our dedication to safety. Price, comfort and convenience will be irrelevant if you go blind after such a procedure. Be vigilant in your quest for an American Board of Plastic Surgery Certified Surgeon.
