Tummy Tuck Procedure Description

  • Our Seattle tummy tuck procedure is performed with general anesthesia for patient comfort and safety.
  • A full abdominoplasty addresses the excess skin and tissue in the lower abdomen — from just above the belly button to the pubic area.
  • A mini-abdominoplasty (mini-tummy tuck) is appropriate for some patients who have a lesser quantity of excess fat and skin in the lower abdomen.
  • A float-abdominoplasty is for a unique group of patients with a high umbilical position and lots of lower abdominal excess skin. This is also an optimal operation for large umbilical hernia operations.
  • Other extensive abdominoplasties, such as an extensive abdominoplasty with flank excision or a circumferential body lift, are reserved for patients that have significant excess skin towards flanks and back.
  • An abdominoplasty involves tightening the muscle structure in the abdominal wall for a more fit, athletic-looking contour to the lower abdomen.
  • The incisions placed when performing an abdominoplasty extend across the lower abdomen and may extend to the lower back, depending upon the quantity of excess skin and tissue that needs to be removed to create the most attractive look.
  • Dr. Egrari uses innovative techniques to perform a drainless abdominoplasty.
  • In addition to the repair of stomach muscles during the procedure, results are amplified with the magnetic muscle stimulation of Cooltone. The treatment triggers your muscles to contract at a rate that is impossible to achieve with exercise alone. As early as 6 weeks post procedure, our patients may elect to have this non-invasive muscle strengthening technology. Our expert providers at Egrari Non-Invasive Center perform this treatment and tailor it to every patient's needs.

Recuperation And Healing After Tummy Tuck

An abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure, and as such, involves discomfort during the early stages. This discomfort can be easily managed with the use of prescription painkillers. Your recovery will be smoother and take fewer days if you commit yourself to strictly following all aftercare instructions. Light activity will become comfortable in about 10 days. At six weeks, you may resume vigorous exercise and activities. EXPAREL®, a long-acting numbing medication, is used in all abdominoplasties for the initial discomfort of this procedure. With our tummy tuck in Bellevue, you can return home the same day you have the procedure. You will be encouraged to walk and move about regularly in one or two days after the procedure.

What Is A Drainless Tummy Tuck?

A drainless tummy tuck is a method of performing a tummy tuck and closing the surgical incisions so that no drains or tubes are placed during the recovery period. This technique involves the use of layered suturing, which brings any separated layers below the skin together and holds them firmly in place. This helps to prevent fluid massive accumulation (a seroma) from developing, and allows your lymphatic system to drain off the small amount of fluid that may accumulate during healing.

Drainless Tummy Tuck Vs. Traditional Tummy Tuck

Both drainless and traditional tummy tuck techniques are similar in some aspects of abdominal reshaping surgery, with an incision placed just above the pubis. The difference between the two surgical techniques lies in the closure of the incision and the suturing techniques used. A regular tummy tuck will involve the use of drains, and generally takes longer to heal. The drainless tummy tuck will involve no drains and has a faster, easier recovery time. Not all patients will be eligible for the drainless tummy tuck in Bellevue. This can be discussed with Dr. Egrari during your initial consultation.

Procedure For A Drainless Tummy Tuck

The procedure for a drainless tummy tuck involves placing an incision to remove excess fat, skin, and tissue and tighten muscles when needed, with the addition of liposuction to aid in the contouring process. The technique employed in a drainless tummy tuck involves a meticulous suturing of the various tissue layers, often with the use of surgical glue so that no spaces are left after surgery that could fill with fluid. This technique is referred to as the “progressive tension suture”, which prevents each layer of tissue from accumulating fluid. Once the layers are sutured and the incision is closed, there is no need for drainage tubes.

Will There Be Any Scarring?

There will be the usual scarring that is associated with a tummy tuck, such as the incision line that extends between the hip bones.

This incision can vary in length depending on the extent of the procedure. With a drainless tummy tuck, there will be no additional scars from incisions from drainage tubes.

Am I A Good Candidate?

Good candidates for a tummy tuck in Seattle have the following traits:

  • Are within 15 or 20 pounds of their ideal weight
  • Are at a stable weight
  • Are non-smokers in good health
  • Have not experienced significant weight loss

Additional Procedures For Full Body Enhancement

Are there several types of tummy tuck surgeries?

Although there are several different tummy tuck surgical procedures, they each follow the same general rules. All procedures will address excess skin in the abdominal area from age, weight loss, pregnancy, or genetics. The procedure not only removes excess skin; it will also tighten and restore the weakened muscle structure in the tummy area. A mini-tummy tuck is less extensive and treats only excess skin in the lower abdominal area. A float tummy tuck is best used for patients with a high belly button and who have extensive abdominal wall muscle weakness rather than an abundance of excess skin.

The most common tummy tuck procedure is a full tummy tuck. A full tummy tuck in Bellevue removes the excess skin on the lower abdomen, stretches the upper skin down, and repositions the belly button. This procedure resolves the issue of weakened muscles in the entire abdomen. If the excess skin extends to the flanks (the sides of body), this problem is also resolved in the surgery. In cases of both front and back excess skin and tissue, a central body lift is often the appropriate procedure. The ideal procedure for you will be chosen based on your unique condition and desired aesthetic goals.

Is a tummy tuck painful?

A tummy tuck is a major surgical procedure. Dr. Egrari uses the medication EXPAREL, a long-acting anesthetic that is injected into the surgical site, for a higher degree of patient comfort. We have a time-proven regimen of tiered pain medications and muscle relaxants to help patients recover in comfort over the first week or so. Most patients no longer need any pain medication after about 10 days following the procedure.

What is recovery from a tummy tuck like?

Most patients will need about two weeks off work. For the first week, you will rest and heal at home. Walking is encouraged to aid in blood circulation, including climbing stairs. At four weeks you can ease into a light exercise regimen, and at six weeks you may resume vigorous exercise and activities.

Do you always repair the muscle?

Almost 90% of patients will require repair to the muscle structure in the abdomen in a tummy tuck to help create a smooth contour. Patients report improved function of the abdominal muscles, and often experience relief from back tension and pain due to the strengthening of the muscles in the procedure.

Can a hernia be repaired with a tummy tuck?

Some hernias may be repaired during the procedure. You will be evaluated in consultation to determine if suitable.

Will there be drains? How long will the drains stay?

The majority of patients do not need drains with the techniques that Dr. Egrari uses. If needed, they will stay in place for seven to ten days.

Will I have a large scar? Do the scars fade?

The most essential element in scarring in a tummy tuck is the position of the incisions placed in the procedure. Dr. Egrari’s considerable experience means that he carefully places the incision very low on the abdomen so it will be covered by even the skimpiest undergarment or swimsuit. The most dynamic and up-to-date suturing techniques are used to reduce any risk of visible scars. We then take the patient through a very detailed post-surgical scar control process that includes taping, silicone sheeting, silicone gel (BioCorneum®), and for some patients, an added laser treatment. We help our patients by teaching them the procedure for the belly button to soften the perimeter for a more pleasing look. And recently we have introduced the Brijjit® device, which has shown promise to reduce the tension on the scar and hence improve quality.

Will you use my own belly button? Will it be an 'innie' or an 'outie'?

The belly button is yours, and will be repositioned to a more youthful location. Dr. Egrari feels that belly button recreation is an art that requires some understanding of what is most beautiful in a classic belly button. He carefully creates the attractive slightly hooded top, oblong shape, and a lower indent. Here are some actual patients.

Can I have a full-body resculpting at the same time?

A tummy tuck may be combined with liposuction of the flanks, a breast lift, breast augmentation, and recontouring of the thighs. And, for the right candidates, fat injection into the buttocks (a Brazilian butt lift) can be done at the same time.

What are the most common complications?

Small wound separations are the most common complications. They are treated conservatively and heal well. Other rare complications include infections, bleeding, more visible scars, seroma formation, blood clots (DVT), and the standard risks associated with the use of anesthetics.

Can I get pregnant after a tummy tuck?

It is best to undergo a tummy tuck after you are finished with childbearing. However, if you become pregnant after the procedure, it will not create a problem for you.

Will my 'abs' show?

Depending on the strength of your muscles, the look of tight, athletic-looking abs is often achieved as the result of a tummy tuck. For some patients, Dr. Egrari carves and etches the central upper indent to produce the look of a more feminine or masculine figure.
