Simple Summer Skincare Changes for Sun, Sweat, and Pool Days
You do not need a completely new skincare routine for summer. A few small adjustments can help your skin stay comfortable through heat, sweat, sunscreen, pool days, and more time outside.
Use Lighter Hydration
Warm weather can make richer creams feel heavy under sunscreen or makeup, but that does not mean you should skip moisturizer.
Try a lighter moisturizer during the day, or pair one with a hydrating serum or complex if your skin needs more support. A richer cream can still be useful at night or after a long day outside.
Move Retinol to Nighttime
Retinol and other retinoid products can make skin more prone to irritation and more sensitive to sunlight. If you use retinol in the morning, move it to your nighttime routine during summer.
Your skin can still be more sensitive to sun exposure while using retinol, so daily sunscreen remains important. Applying it at night also helps avoid applying an active product shortly before direct daytime exposure.
Keep Sunscreen Easy to Reapply
For long days outside, start with a broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 50. Reapply every two hours while you are in direct sunlight, and sooner after swimming, sweating, or towel drying.
Choose a format you will realistically keep using. A lotion may be best for the first application, while an easy option like EltaMD UV AOX Mist SPF 40 can make reapplication more convenient throughout the day.

Cleanse Gently After Outdoor Days
After the beach, pool, workouts, or hours outside, use a gentle or hydrating cleanser to remove sunscreen, sweat, chlorine, saltwater, and makeup.
Skip harsh scrubs or overly drying cleansers, especially if your skin already feels tight, warm, or irritated.
