Laser hair removal is one of the most effective ways to reduce unwanted hair long-term—but it’s also a treatment that requires patience, consistency, and the right prep to see the smooth, lasting results you’re hoping for.
If you’ve ever wondered why multiple sessions are necessary or how to get the most out of your treatments, here’s a the breakdown.
Why So Many Treatments Are Needed
1 | Hair grows in cycles—not all at once
Every hair on your body rotates through three stages:
- Anagen (active growth) – The only phase where the follicle is connected to its blood supply.
- Catagen (transition) – The follicle detaches and begins to shrink.
- Telogen (resting) – The hair sits in the follicle and eventually sheds.
A laser can only effectively target hair in the anagen phase, because that’s when the pigment in the follicle can absorb the laser’s energy and destroy the root.
2 | Only a small percentage of hair is treatable at each visit
Depending on the area, only 10–30% of hairs are in the anagen phase at any given time. That means every appointment captures a new batch of active follicles—but not all of them.
3 | Your schedule matters more than you think
Each body area has its own cycle length:
- Face: every 4–6 weeks
- Underarms / Bikini / Brazilian: every 6–8 weeks
- Legs / Back / Arms: every 8–10 weeks
If you wait too long, you miss the growth window and results slow down. If you have your treatment too soon, you’re not hitting enough new anagen hairs. Staying consistent is the single most important factor for success.
The Results You Can Expect
Most people see:
- 15–20% reduction per session
- Significant thinning and softer regrowth by session 3–4
- Dark, coarse hair responding the fastest
- Finer or lighter hairs needing more treatments or maintenance
A typical full series includes 6–8 treatments, but hormonal areas or fine hair may require more.

Do’s & Don’ts Before Your Appointment
Do:
Come consistently based on your recommended schedule.
Your cycle timing determines your results.
Tell your provider about medications.
Antibiotics, Accutane (isotretinoin), retinoids, or medications causing sun sensitivity may require a delay.
Tell your provider if you have a history of herpes or cold sores (HSV).
You may need a short course of antiviral medication before and after treatment to help prevent a breakout. The laser doesn’t cause HSV, but it can trigger a flare in people who have a history of HSV.
Shave 24 hours before your treatment.
This ensures the laser focuses on the follicle, not the surface hair.
Don’t:
No waxing, plucking, threading, bleaching, or depilatory creams.
These remove the hair from the root and make the laser ineffective.
Don’t use heavy actives (tretinoin, retinol, AHA/BHA) on the treated area for a week before each session.
Don’t tan, spray tan, or use any self tanning products.
Tanned skin increases the risk of burns and reduces effectiveness.
Don’t apply deodorant or lotions immediately before treatment.
Aftercare: What to Expect
Mild redness, swelling around follicles, or a warm sensation is normal for 24–48 hours.
You may also notice:
- “Pepper spots” (tiny dark dots of treated hair)
- Shedding of old hairs 1–2 weeks later
- Slower, softer regrowth over time
Avoid hot tubs, saunas, intense workouts, or sweating on the treated area for 24 hours.
Maintenance & Long-Term Planning
Laser hair removal offers long-term reduction, not permanent removal for everyone. Hormones, genetics, and natural hair cycles all play a role.
Most patients choose:
- 1–2 maintenance sessions per year (for touch-ups)
- Additional treatments for hormonal areas like face, bikini, or underarms
Who Makes a Good Candidate?
Modern devices like the Clarity II allow safe and effective treatment on a wider range of skin tones, but the best results still occur with:
- Darker, coarser hair
- Light to medium skin tones
- Consistent scheduling and correct prep
Your provider will assess your skin type, hair color, thickness, and medical history to create the safest plan.
Laser hair removal works—but only when treatments are timed correctly. Because hair grows in stages, consistency is key to catching every follicle at the right moment. Bring good prep, follow aftercare instructions, and stay on schedule for the smoothe
