Gummy Bear Implants
Breast implants are one of the most highly tested, analyzed and scrutinized medical devices that have ever been marketed. From its humble beginnings in the 1960’s to today’s highly sophisticated implants they have gone through a tremendous amount of evolution. Today, the two implants that are available are saline and silicone. The silicone implants are either semi-cohesive or form-stable cohesive. The semi-cohesive is currently the most common implant used in the United States. The form-stable cohesive (aka Gummy Bear) are the highly talked about form of the implant that are solid but soft. The allure of these implants is that it will not have the ability to leak or migrate in case of rupture or disruption. These implants are currently not available for general use in the United States and are widely available in Canada and Europe. The plastic surgery community feels that in the next three years they will be available and will add to our current armamentarium. There are surgeons in various areas that are involved with scientific trials who are offering these currently non FDA approved implants.
The semi-cohesive implants that many of us use are the best that we have now. They also keep their form when ruptured but are not solid. Many of us feel that these are the state of the art implants with the best shape and feel. At Egrari Plastic Surgery Center we are continuously following the latest trends and will always be on the cutting edge when a new technology comes about. Stay tuned.
