  • If you have accumulated excess skin of the arms secondary to weigh loss (“bat wings”).
  • If you have lost the contour of your arms as a result of excess skin.
  • If you will not wear short sleeves as a result of unsightly arms.
  • If you still feel obese despite your weight loss, due to your arm appearance.

    Intended results of brachioplasty

  • Remove and refine the excess fat and skin of the upper arm.
  • Create an arm that can show the tone of the muscle of the arm.

    Description of brachioplasty procedure

    • The excess skin of the arm is removed from the armpit area down to the elbows.
    • Occasionally the incisions are extended into the arm pit to capture the excess skin of the area, and are extended below the elbow to refine the lower area.
    • Liposuction is a major part of this operation.
    • All sutures are absorbable. Skin is covered with glue or tape.
    • Occasionally drains are used.
    • A special garment is provided.
    • This is an operation that is done under general anesthesia and is an outpatient procedure.

    Recuperation and healing after brachioplasty

    • There is minimal discomfort that is controlled by oral analgesics.
    • Most patients take a week off work, and resume exercise in 4-6 weeks.
    • Lingering swelling of arms and hand resolves in about a month.
    • Results are evident in 3 months.

    • Additional procedures that may enhance the result are lateral Thoracoplasty (chest wall recontouring), breast lift, and upper body lift.
